Featuring the German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, The Magic Flute tells the story of a handsome prince who has been persuaded by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from captivity. Accompanied by Papageno, the prince and the princess undergo severe trials, which end in triumph. Soprano Golda Schultz stars as Pamina, tenor Charles Castronovo as Tamino, baritone Markus Werba as Papageno, and soprano Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night. Julie Taymor’s spectacular production is a classic of the Met repertoire. THE Cultural Center of the Philippines spreads the message of Christmas and brings holiday cheers to every Filipino through its amazing Christmas display, featuring the interplay between lights and shadow, which will be shown every night until January 6, 2019. A series of illuminated images, using stencils that are painstakingly made by creative hands from the Production and Exhibition Department, relives the biblical story of how the Messiah was born. The “Christmas Story” begins with the Annunciation, or Mary’s journey of obedience that marks her role in giving birth to the Messiah. The light and shadow play continues with the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem after Emperor Augustus ordered people to return to the town where their families originally came from. It has been a Filipino Christmas tradition to re-enact the difficult search of Joseph and Mary for shelter in Bethlehem; this is locally known as Panunuluyan. FRESH from its jam-packed outreach concerts in Davao City and the province of Antique, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) will share the gift of music this holiday season with free concerts, featuring classic pieces, popular songs, and all-time favorite Christmas carols. The Philippine premiere orchestra will bring holiday cheer to the students, faculty members and visitors of the University of the Philippines-Diliman on December 8, at the Quezon Hall Amphitheater at 7pm. The concert is in cooperation with the University of the Philippines, led by its president Danilo Concepcion. Dubbed “Pamaskong Handog ng UP,” the live orchestra concert will be conducted by PPO resident conductor Maestro Herminigildo Ranera. The concert will also feature guest performers such as mezzo soprano Jai S. Aracama, UP Cherubim and Seraphim, UP Concert Chorus, UP Singing Ambassadors, UP Staff Chorale and UP Chorus Classes.
