When the pandemic began, I added a food review sub-category to my blog, http://www.ClariSays.com. I named it Support Your Lokal, a category dedicated entirely to local products. Proudly Pinoy in short!
I recently became aware of this brand. After doing some research, I believe it deserves a spot in this blog’s Support Your Lokal category.
The Original Okoy King
To begin, let us define the term okoy in case you are unfamiliar with this Pinoy delicacy.
Ukoy, ukuy, or okoy is a deep-fried patty or fritter made of rice dough, flour, grated sweet potato, or vegetables. Unshelled small shrimp, bean sprouts, and chopped spring onions can be added on top. The fritter is served with vinegar sauce. Check out the image below.
Doesn’t it look delicious? Moreover, as stated in the description, okoy can be made with vegetables. In the case of The Original Okoy King in Bulacan, they use 100% calabaza/kalabasa or squash in English.
Squash is one of the world’s most delicious, versatile, and healthiest vegetables. Squash’s numerous vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants provide numerous health benefits. Squash contains antioxidants that can help reduce oxidative stress. Squash helps improve eye and skin health.
So, if you’re going to eat a snack, why not choose a healthy and delicious one?
The Original Okoy King was featured on GMA News TV’s ‘Pera Paraan’ on August 18, 2021, hosted by Susan Enriquez and Mark Salazar. We can see how the brand creates its mix and cooks their okoy. And now that I’ve tried it myself, I strongly recommend The Original Okoy King. It’s crunchy, tasty, and nutritious!
By the way, if you watched their featrue, you would know that the brand uses approximately 200 squashes per day. It occurred to me that with continued support, the business could help many local farmers.
Moreover, the owner also expressed a desire to franchise her business. Good news though! The Original Okoy King of Bulacan now serves 100% pure and nutritious kalabasa in the following locations:
- Unitop Mall, Baliwag, Bulacan
- Unitop Mall, Dasmariñas, Cavite
- Sm Center Pulilan, Bulacan (terminal booth)
- South Supermarket, Malolos, Bulacan
- 24 Road 10, Barangay Pag-Asa, Quezon City (near SM North)
Being from Quezon City, I got mine from Okoy King QC; see my video for a crunch test. Get your hands on these freshly cooked Okoys.
