Squid Game is a Must-Watch 2021 Series on Netflix

After the first season of D.P. (2021), here’s another Korean series worth watching on Netflix. The series is called Squid Game. Isn’t that a strange title? I completely agree. But there’s no need to look into it. All you have to do is pay attention from the start.

Trust me.

Squid Game (2021) | 1 Season

Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits — with deadly high stakes.

Starring: Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-jun
Creators: Hwang Dong-hyuk

I’m sure you’ve read comments on social media about how much people enjoyed watching Squid Game. There is a range of factors, depending on the viewer. But the reason Squid Game caught my attention is how they presented a common theme.

Hear me out. The Squid Game series, as per the summary, is a harsh test of morality and humanity. It’s a pattern we’ve seen time and time again. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of ‘Squid Game’; however, gave viewers a unique narrative making sure viewers can still relate to it.

Imagine that individuals in desperate need of money are given the opportunity to compete in various children’s games. They accept the bizarre invitation in the hopes of winning easy money, oblivious to the horrors that will cost them their lives.

Okay, I’ll admit that it has aspects of Battle Royale, Hostel, Hunger Games, Money Heist, SOTUS, and Alice in Borderland. But not in a negative way, because I was able to tell these shows apart from one another.

Squid Game, based on the shows I cited, can be triggering. I’m not only talking about the gore or anything like that. I was also referring to emotional and mental health. The series showed life’s obstacles that are too great to conquer. These scenarios strike a chord, especially when you put yourself in the situation.

Regardless, I genuinely liked watching Netflix’s newest Korean series from start to finish. As the series came to a close, unexpected stories emerged that piqued my interest. In that sense, I’m excited about the second season.

Now for my rating. You’ll be surprised to learn that I give Squid Game (2021) season 1 a 9/10. It’s a great series, but it was not enough to overthrow the effects D.P. (2021) gave me.

Rating: 9 out of 10.
