Kuya J Restaurant or simply Kuya J is a fast-growing restaurant that serves mouthwatering Filipino comfort food. But did you know that Kuya J Restaurant is formerly known as “Ang Kan-anan ni Kuya J?
The restaurant chain started as a humble homegrown Cebuano eatery loved by many. It was owned by a man named Jay who has now migrated to Canada. It was then acquired by a Cebu-based entrepreneur named Winglip Chang. Since the acquisition, Kuya J has transformed into the restaurant we now know.
At present, Kuya J continues to satisfy Filipino’s palate nationwide. In fact, the restaurant chain opened its 60th branch late last year and is expected to open more reaching their goal of 200 operating branches by the end of 2017.
Interiors and Delightful Feast
Now let’s talk about Kuya J Restaurant’s interior design. We’ve visited different branches but the one we always visit is at SM Cherry Congressional Avenue. There are three elements that caught my attention.
First is the bright lighting. Yeah, sure it’s “normal” for restaurants to have that kind of lighting. However, not all can pull off that brightly-lit space with a comfortable vibe that’s visible even on the outside.
Second is the wood crate shelves. With that lighting, it’s easy to appreciate the gorgeous shelves which displays books and toys. If you want to read while waiting, just grab one. (Make sure you return, okay?)
Lastly, the way the chairs and tables are arranged. If you’re following my blog closely, you may have noticed that I have issues with those. With Kuya J though, I did not have any because everything is well-aligned and properly arranged giving a good amount of space for all diners.
Now onto the food. Since my family and I are a regular here, we can attest that Kuya J only uses the freshest ingredients. So far we haven’t had a bad experience with their food.
Below are a few of the many dishes we have tried and loved.
DILIS & SALTED EGG RICE
This fried garlic rice consists of dilis (anchovies), tomatoes, onions and salted egg.
RELYENONG TALONG – This one’s may fave!
This is Kuya Js version of Filipino omelet. There’s grilled eggplant, fresh tomatoes, cheese and of course, egg!
Grilled eggplant is stuffed with fresh tomatoes and onions, topped with salted egg and doused with a special bagoong (fermented fish/shrimp paste).
Deep-fried crunchy shrimps paired with Kuya J dipping sauce.
Stir-fried vermicelli noodles with pork, seafood, vegetables and seasonings added.
Deep-fried pork belly and the classic lechon sauce.
This chicken is cooked tinola-style with added creaminess of coconut milk and spiciness of green chili peppers.
Besides tasty dishes, Kuya J Restaurant also offers great desserts. A must-try is their unique version of the Pinoy favorite Halo-Halo.
