LIDO Cocina Tsina and the Lucky Angpao Tree

Moving to another country can be quite sad especially if you’ve established friendships and connections for the past 83 years of your life. Realizing that you left everything behind, you start to miss the people, the views especially the food. So when my grandmother’s longtime friend came here for a short visit, we immediately took her out for lunch. Our choice was LIDO Cocina Tsina by Panciteria LIDO.

LIDO Cocina Tsina which has been around since 1936 serves Chinese dishes injected with the Filipino taste that we love. The restaurant which started as a modest eatery in Binondo was called Panciteria Lido. Mr. Lido, the Chinese chef-cum-owner served his classic Chinese favorites such as asado, guisado, noodles, and wanton with the sweet and salty flavor Filipinos love. With the goal of expanding his menu, he later experimented with a Chinese pork roast recipe that well-matched the Filipino taste.

Indeed, LIDO Cocina Tsina by Panciteria LIDO is the perfect restaurant for our special guest. We chose their Panciteria Lido Cocina Tsina Visayas Branch. Though is was near the vicinity, it was our first time there. And the experience was fantastic!

Drunken Lechon Macau and Buttered Chicken were to die for! As the menu described it, the Drunken Lechon Macau is indeed a Cantonese Gastronomy at its finest! There are no shortcuts in preparing this dish. The pieces of pork belly were carefully picked and cured in premium wine and spices for 60 hours. Now that explains the richness of flavor which is the same for the Buttered Chicken. Not to mention, the crispiness in every bite.

The Steamed Pork Ribs with Taosi, I must say was also delish. People say that this is the best and well-known dim sum dish because of the tender meat and flavor. I, too, would agree. As soon as the waiter opened the lid, the aroma was simply irresistible. And the meat, boy was it juicy and tender.

We certainly had a wonderfully delicious feast at LIDO Cocina Tsina by Panciteria LIDO. Lola Pining, my grandmother’s friend said she enjoyed the meal especially Drunken Lechon Macau and Pinipig Jelly Cooler. She also loved the Chopsuey Guisado and Sotanghon which she misses so much. I can honestly say it was definitely a mission accomplished.

As I paid our bill, the waitress informed us that despite the two senior citizen discounts, we still reached PHP 1,100.00. Now what does that mean?
