I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories. On the one hand, you can sugarcoat it. Nothing is too messed up that can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel Song. I like that version as much as the next girl does. It’s just not the truth.

The Fault in Our Stars is a young adult novel written by John Green which was published in January 2012. It tells us the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster who is forced by her parents especially her mother to attend a weekly Support Group for cancer patients and make friends. And that, my friend, is where Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters meet and fall in love.

It was during the 33rd Manila International Book Fair in September 2012 when I came across this book. It was in early 2013 when I started reading it but stopped at page 24. After undergoing some tests, I finally had the courage to finish the book. By mid-2013, I was looking forward to a film adaptation.

Like the book, like the film

The book is perfect. It brought out many different emotions from the reader. I never imagined a story involving cancer to have the power to make you laugh and cry. Hazel and Augustus are two smart teenagers. Their characters take you along with them. You can’t stay in one spot and turn your back. You need to move and deal with the outcome. Not only did the characters acknowledged the pain, but they also shared their fears, dreams and ideas.

I am happy to say this is how I felt while watching the film. Though there are some small details missing, it doesn’t matter. What John Green wrote in the book, director Josh Boone was able to show it in the film.
